If you are a US citizen and your spouse does not have a Social Security number or an ITIN and you are not applying for an ITIN with the tax return then you can only file your tax return as Married Filing Separately. Where asked to enter the spouse's Social Security number enter 999-88-9999. You can only print and mail your tax return, it cannot be e-filed. When you print the tax return erase the Social Security number for your spouse and manually enter NRA for non-resident alien.

So despite all the features in this software, and the hundreds of dollars we part with to use it, nobody in the entire team could manage to program a tick box that says spouse is not a US citizen, no SSN? I've paid a boatload of money for the privilege of using this software after manually filing on paper for the past decade, and now I come crawling back and shell out only to be told to print it out and mail it anyway! Completely laughable. It is costing me as much to jump through these hoops as the tax I owe. Won't be recommending to others.
When you file as married filing separately, the IRS requires a tax number for your spouse so that they can match your return to any return filed by your spouse. It is the IRS that sets the rules for e-file transmittal and acceptance, not TurboTax. If the IRS does not want you to be able to e-file with an NRA spouse, that is their choice.
But you do understand how confusing this is for individuals like that person and myself, whose spouse is not American.
We already have it so tough and yet they make it so tough just to file the taxes. Forcing us to pay more because they are cheats, (TurboTax) has been caught cheating and lying and defrauding people for years. And even now they make it so hard for us, don't blame the IRS when the software is programed to fraud you out of your money.
