Been using turbotax for over 15 years and between last years W2 import bugs having additional line 10 fields, and this blatant oversight, it's just not worth the cost or headache.
Maybe if everyone 'inconvenienced' by this bug (or lack of proper coding by the developers) contacted intuit for a refund they'd actually do some proper qa testing on code releases.
Tax laws change, tax forms change as do preparation fees and procedures.
The problems that leak out of development and Product Quality do indicate that Intuit lacks adequate regression test procedures and instead relies on users to detect unintended effects of a software change. This has been the case for many years.
I resubmitted mine today and it was accepted. 🙂
@StephRs , examine your tax return for an erroneously calculated excess contribution on Form 5329.
They were accepted today. No change to refund amount, but this thread serves as documentation it's not an end user mistake or malicious deception. 😂
Does turbo tax fix this? Iv been trying to go into my turbo tax to fix it but it sends me in a circle
Was hoping to see if you read my initial post about the form 5329 issue. I'm confident that the form 8999 fix is altering how form 5329 should be filled out regarding the excise take on HSA overcontributions. Its resulting in a significant amount of extra tax for me. Are you able to verify this issue and provide any updates?
Thank you for your help
@Anonymous
I am documenting the situation that dmertz described about the 5329, and will forward that to the next level up.

There should be a THUMBS DOWN icon on this forum.
Defects like this should never make it into a Production environment. I am now stuck and cannot file my return. I have lost all confidence in TurboTax after using this software provider exclusively for more than a decade. After my 2023 filing, I will not be using TurboTax anymore. I suggest others seriously reconsider this as well. There are other providers out there that offer the same type of software, and their software Dev and QA processes cannot be worse than TurboTax's processes. We're all paying for defective software, and that is simply unacceptable.
Hello,
I have the same issue. My HSA carryover from 2022 is $194. This is being applied to line 2 of Form 8889, even though I made this contribution via a cafeteria plan. Line 11 of my Form 8889 is $7469, Line 12 is $281, and Line 13 is $194. I contributed less than my allowed maximum contribution in order to cancel out my carryover from 2022. However, because TurboTax is putting the $194 carryover on Line 2 of Form 8889, then Line 43 of Form 5329 is $87, when it should be $0. This prohibits my under-contribution this past year from cancelling out my over-contribution carried over from 2022.
With the way Turbo Tax is processing this situation, my carryover is not being completely cancelled out like it should be. I end up paying additional tax and having a carryover to next year when the carryover from 2022 should have been resolved by the under-contribution in 2023. While I'm not a tax expert, I have read widely about resolving HSA over-contributions and spoken with a CPA (a friend). I think TurboTax needs to correct the way this situation is being handled, as it’s causing a lot of grief for myself and others-- everyone on this thread. Personally, I need TurboTax to assist with an amended return to correct this issue. The online version of TurboTax is not letting me correct it currently. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Sarah
I agree with this completely and frankly, it is embarrassing to Intuit that a bug so basic made it into your production code at this point in the tax year. Perhaps if you spent a bit more money actually paying good developers instead of dumping it all into marketing and sales, you would not have basic issues like this. The quality of your product has declined precipitously in recent years despite the fact that your prices have gone up.
I have been a TurboTax user for over 10 years now, and this will be my last year. Just pathetic.
For anyone seeing this, I am now getting a message from Turbotax indicating that a bugfix is being pushed on 2/23 to supposedly fix this, so evidently we will have to wait an extra week to file our tax returns.
So... anyone know if we're good here? It's the twenty-third now, but (frustratingly) Intuit appears to have deleted the KB which had been posted for this issue.
I'm not overly eager to pay twice and official communication has been... let's say: "lax" on this topic
