If you are saying that your e-file was rejected because your Social Security number had already been used in this tax season, then there are two major possibilites:

1. Someone you know claimed you as a spouse or a dependent. This happens often in families when there is confusion over who is claiming whom (ex-spouses, grandparents, etc.). The solution is to print and mail your return. After some months, the IRS will contact you and the other party to discuss who is able to claim whom.

2. Someone stole your identity and used it to file a fraudulent return. In this case, the IRS says this:

Here’s what happens if you learn you are a victim of tax-related identity theft. For example, your e-filed return rejects because of a duplicate tax filing with your Social Security number, and you report the incident to us:

  • You should file by paper if you are unable to e-file
  • You should complete and file Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit, with your paper tax return
  • Your tax return and Form 14039 are received for processing by the IRS.
  • You'll receive an acknowledgment letter
  • Your case goes to our Identity Theft Victim Assistance (IDTVA) organization if another return is already present on the account, where it will be handled by employees with specialized training
  • The Identity Theft Victim Assistance organization will work your case by:
    • Assessing the scope of the issues and trying to determine if your case affects one or more tax years.
    • Addressing all the issues related to the fraudulent return. This includes determining if there are additional victims, who may be unknown to you, listed on the fraudulent return.
    • Researching the case to double check all the names, addresses and SSNs are accurate or fraudulent.
    • Conducting a case analysis to determine if all outstanding issues were addressed
    • Ensuring your tax return is properly processed and if you are due a refund, releasing your refund.
    • Removing the fraudulent return from your tax records.
    • Marking your tax account with an identity theft indicator, which completes our work on your case and helps protect you in the future.
  • You will receive notification that your case has been resolved. This is generally within 120 days but complex cases may take 180 days or longer
  • Certain tax-related identity theft victims will be placed into the Identity Protection PIN program and annually receive a new, six-digit IP PIN that must be entered on the tax return. The IP PIN adds an extra layer of identity protection. Some taxpayers will be given the option of getting an IP PIN, using the IRS.gov/getanippin tool.
The above list is from a subpage on https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams - please review this part of the IRS website.

The site uses an interactive service. that suggestively guides users...- it helps.  I get the return back and check and resubmit my e- file return..again.  I do as I've been instructed- refile and try again Turbo tax site suggests this each time-until the service sends the IRS system a flag on your tax return info and a **bleep** show outta my tax duties was all I got- After all I did-was the suggested action of the TT site. As I  kept following the instructive prompts on the Turbo Tax site, my every attempt to e-file was met and rejected.  I go and then reviewed again and e-file resent, rejected also again. This solution from the site to try try again-(no help, not really)  was the idea of the help tool on turbo tax and advises that the rejected return should be e-filed again.   All my info was correct all the while...and rejected immediately. My repeated attempts, which I feared but Turbo Tax swore Id be okay- yea those tries to re-e-file that way and keep trying killed the option for me to e-file- now I have send in my returns thru the mail/ see that refund by Christmas i hope!!!

HI.. so all I can offer is my own understanding from whats gon on with my refund. I have still not received a federal tax return refund for the social security issued to me, 40yrs ago,LOL. I haven't yet received my state returns either. The upside- I got my stimulus, considering my income-I didnt have to file, I made less than 5000$. But I wanted to file, its a personal thing. So Ive called its - too many times- they could likely got me on harassment by phone at this point. I went ahead and tried to enter my info. into the wheres my refund for the Irs site. I needed three things- My social, my bday, the amount expected of my refund(to the dollar exactly per my listed refund on my 1040. If you didn't know that much- no luck finding help with that tool. I couldn't recall, to save my life, if there was a tax prep site Id used without realizing Id sent it in also. I found one I had tried to use- and the amount listed as my expected rerun based on the site Karma Tax-I forgot I even checked this site- had a total refund expected amount that worked...i know right...I then used the info to retry to tool to see where the refund was. It says it will be delivered to deposited to the account listed on the tax return 1040 thats been received. GREAT! LOL Now Im playing a game of chance- I can wait and see if I managed to outsmart my self- and it is my account thats getting this refund- if it ever comes-lol or Ill be late to report that its an imposter and not me! IDK whats going to happen, I expected the stimulus I got to be higher-1200 but I also have kids that qualify for the additional stimulus amounts, 2kids. 1kid is too old at 18since this April. LOL I cant win for losing!!! I say keep trying and hope, like i do, the its phones will be our saving grace, when the IRS can communicate finally based off the system info  they have for each individual return - right now I cant ask for help from an automated system...it wont help me. Ill keep trying and ill update this if there any new additional updates on my own situation. Good luck and god be with us all- or maybe we can all make sure we help each other!! Also try contacting your local state taxes office. They have been incredibly kind trying to figure out anything they can to help- no they haven't helped, lol, but they have made me feel less freaked put about things and gave me a bit of relief that this can resolve no matter what- if I didn't get it, there a record of that with the irs- I will be issued my refund no matter who got fraudulently or not at all- I just have to wait and watch and keep things rolling thru the its when they resume operations again like they normally have.
