Your name has to match the same name as on your Social Security card.

The IRS gets the data base of names from the Social Security Administration, so what you enter on your tax return needs to match what the SSA thinks it is.

That is, if you have changed your name with the SSA, you need to use your latest name. If you haven't notified the SSA of a change, you have to use the name they know you by, not the name you go by now.

You may need to contact the SSA to ask them what they think your name is - see ssa.gov and see if there is a local office near you.
