My marital status is single and according to the Arizona state income tax brackets my taxes should be 4.24%. But I was only required to pay ~2.0%, I cant understand why.

I calculated my state income taxes for 2016, and Ive looked at what my employer deducts for each paycheck, and the percentages Im seeing are coming out much lower than I would expect for the Arizona state income taxes at my salary. I cant understand why there is discrepancy.

AZ requires you to fill out a separate withholding form (A-4) with your employer in addition to the Federal W-4. 1.8% is one of the AZ options you can (and apparently did) choose ...

Where was "my tax return" attached to my question or view-able to "anyone on the internet"?? And as far as "personal information", sharing that I file single and my tax bracket really isnt a big concern to me. Please repost my question.

Thank you, I just took a look at the form. But Im still a bit confused, this form only specifies the percentage our employer should withhold correct? I will check with my employer to see which option I selected. But even if I did select the 1.8% option, wouldnt I still have to pay close to the 4.24% tax bracket at the end of the year?

We cannot see your return ... Rainman deduced the amount from your question.

The tax brackets are graduated ... which means you pay some at the lower rate before you get to the full rate ... see this tool ... https://smartasset.com/taxes/arizona-tax-calculator

You need to figure out which rate you want to be withheld at based on your total income ... if you don't withhold enough then you will need to increase that amount or add something to line 1.

AZ form W-4 ... you get to choose your rate of withholding ...   https://www.azdor.gov/Portals/0/ADOR-forms/TY2017/10100/10121_f.pdf

Remember your income is reduced by deductions and allowances before you are taxed ... review the actual return carefully to see how this is calculated.
