My form 1099-NEC has a “Payers TIN” and not a EIN. It keeps saying I’m putting in the numbers incorrectly but I'm not. What should I do to correct this?

Tax ID and Employer ID Numbers are both the same length as a social security number, 12-3456789. A social security number has the dashes differently, 123-45-6789. Your form may be wrong - missing information and you need to call the issuer.

I assume you are reporting self employment income?

Actually you can just enter it as Other self employment income or as Cash or General income. You don't need to get a 1099MISC, 1099NEC or 1099K. Even if you did you can enter all your income as Cash. Only the total goes to schedule C. You should be entering the income from your own records.

The Form 1099-NEC is self employment income. Since the payer is using a taxpayer identification number (TIN), possibly a social security number (SSN), instead of an employer identification number (EIN)  be sure you are selecting the correct type of number.

  • In TurboTax Online/Mobile:
    1. Sign into your tax return > Select Search (upper right) > type 1099nec > click the 'See more' in the FAQ below
    2. Click 1099-NEC > Edit beside your form > Look at the selection you chose (TIN or SSN)
  • In TurboTax Desktop
    1. Sign into your tax return > Select Search (upper right) > type 1099nec > click the Jump to.. link
