This happens at both the state and federal level more often than folks think. When the IRS gets a state return, they just shred it. The IRS, being a federal agency, could care less about state taxes. The opposite holds true for the 37 states that tax personal income. So if you mailed your federal return to your state, they just shredded it. So you need to print, sign and mail your federal return again if mailing it is the option you're choosing in lieu of e-filing it.
