My dependent filed and did not earmark himself a dependent, now my return rejects. So now I have to do an amendment for him. How do I show him as a dependent on the amendment (1040x)? It has to go as a paper amendment. It doesn't seem to have a way, unlike the 1040.

When you amend his return, click his name in My Info and go through the screens to the question that asks if he can be claimed as someone else's dependent. Answer YES to that, and YES to the next one that asks if he will be claimed.
You will have to mail your own return that claims him. His SSN has been put into the system and that will not change this year even if you amend his tax return. You are blocked from e-filing with his SSN on your own return, so print, sign and date your return in ink, and file it by mail.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
If it is any comfort---this is a very common problem for parents of students and young people filing their first tax returns. They have no idea how much trouble they are causing for their parents when they say no one can claim them.
