All of 2024 I lived in IL and worked in MO with only one source of income. In previous years, I only had a MO W-4, so my W-2 only showed MO. Since IL taxes are higher than MO, this meant I was owing some money when filing taxes as I filed a tax return for both IL and MO. Last year, I spoke directly with a TurboTax Expert, and they advised me to file an IL W-4 as well so I wouldn't owe taxes when filing. I filed an IL W-4 in Feb 2024; so in total I have a Federal, MO, and IL W-4 now. When trying to file my taxes, I get an error "Return cannot be e-filed when sum of Illinois wages plus out of state wages on all W-2s does not equal total wages reported on IL Schedule CR."
My employer provides me with only 1 W-2. My W-2 shows ~$70,000 in box 1 for total wages, which is accurate for my total salary after pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions. In box 16 it shows ~$21,000 for IL state wages and ~$70,000 for MO state wages (matching box 1). I have no idea where the ~$21,000 is coming from, but I assume that is causing the problem. Is my W-2 and/or W-4 set up incorrectly, or do I need to do something special in TurboTax to accommodate this situation with resident and non-resident state filing?
