I moved from IL to SC in August 18, so I've had to do the two states returns. I received income from my IL job for vacation days until Nov so I have about $25,000 income that I have to pay taxes for in SC. Based on the information SC is showing I will need to pay in about $3300 in taxes. This seems strange since that is over 12% of the $25,000. Would anyone know what I did wrong?
Thanks

did you complete the IL form first and answer the questions correctly related to how long you were living in IL?
then complete the SC form and it should provide a credit for IL taxes paid. Trace that the taxes paid to IL are displayed as a credit in SC.
just because it states that you owe $3300 in taxes doesn't mean it's all related to the $25000. you may have been underwithheld for other reasons. For example, did your IL employer withhold SC taxes on that $25,000? are you getting a refund from IL and in effect those same dollars are owed to SC? What is the net amount you owe (or will get refunded) when adding the two states together? Also, SC tax rate is 7% at the highest level while IL is a flat 4.895%, so there is some effect from that as well.
Thanks for the info. Started a new return and worked it that way. At this point the taxes about cancel each other out 🙂
