Moving Expense Deduction California

  1. I moved to and from California in 2024 for a 3-month paid summer internship.
  2. I was supposed to receive moving compensation from my employer and know the amount they would have paid me. However, I never followed through with the process, so I didn't receive any compensation for my moving expenses.
  3. I also combined the move with some personal travel. My employer informed me of the prorated amount they would have paid using their formula.

Can I claim the moving expense deduction based on the amount they would have paid me?

MOVING

Per the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond, moving expenses are not deductible on a federal return except for certain active duty members of the military.

There are several states that allow a deduction for moving expenses on the state return:  AZ, AR, CA, HI, IA, MA, MN, NJ, NY, PA and VA  You can enter your moving expenses in the federal software and the information will flow to your state return.

Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Other Deductions and Credits>Moving Expenses
