Missed RMD payment

2025 TT desktop premium. My ira broker failed to send me RMD for 2025 although they told me last year I was set up to autopay the required distribution.  Where in TT do I fill out the form to request mercy from the IRS to not have to pay the fines as it was not my fault and I took the distribution as soon as I discovered they had not done so as they had told me previously they would.

Since you have TurboTax Desktop, you are able to click on Open Form at the top left to generate the form automatically, by following these steps:

  1. Go to Open Form at the top left corner of your TurboTax screen and type 5329
  2. Select Form 5329-T (or 5329-S, if applicable)
  3. On Form 5329-T, scroll down to Line 52a and input the $_ that was your RMD
  4. On Line 53a, input zero (0) for the amount of the RMD you took
  5. Input the $_ in Box A found just below Line 53b
  6. Click Explain just below the $_
  7. Write: "I mistakenly assumed my financial institution was automating my RMD. Upon discovering the error in 2026, I immediately withdrew the full RMD amount of $_. I have now confirmed the automatic withdrawal is set up and have also added a reminder so that this does not happen again."

Missed RMD payment

It can get confusing, especially if you did take some of your RMD. Let's break it down:

  1. First, add up what your RMD for all of your accounts should have been and that is your total RMD as of December 31, 2025
  2. Input that total in Line 52a
  3. On Line 53a, input the amount of the RMD you did take from all accounts in 2025, but only the 2025 portion (not zero, since you took some of your RMD and not the 2026 amount you took)
  4. Subtract 53a from 52a (This is your balance of RMD not taken for 2025)
  5. Enter the total in Box A found just below Line 53b (This is the remaining amount of your RMD you did not take for which you're requesting the waiver)
  6. Click Explain just below the balance amount and write your explanation, "Write: "I mistakenly assumed my financial institution was automating my RMD. Upon discovering the error in 2026, I immediately withdrew the full RMD amount of $_. I have now confirmed the automatic withdrawal is set up and have also added a reminder so that this does not happen again."

You should see a zero for penalty amount on Line 54a. Form 5329 is requesting a waiver for the amount you should have taken by December 31, 2025. Therefore, you don't enter the 1/6/26 amount because we are working with what you actually took in 2025, minus what you should have taken by December 31, 2025.

thank you so much for that information.

I'm filling out the 5329 but have question.

i had one ira that did take the distribution correctly and one that did not.

so on 53a do i add them together or just the one that did not distribute?

Yes, add them together. See the instructions below from Form 5329 instructions.

Lines 53a and 53b

Enter the amount distributed towards the required minimum distribution from all plans. Do not include on line(s) 53a and/or 53b, any distribution(s) received after the deadline for taking the minimum required distribution or during the correction window.

  • Correction window.
    • The correction window ends on the earliest of the following dates.
    • The date of mailing the deficiency notice with respect to the imposition of this tax;
      • The date the tax is assessed; or
      • The last day of the second taxable year that begins after the end of the taxable year in which the additional tax is imposed.

Missed RMD payment

i'm so sorry. I'm still confused

on line 53a I put the amount from the one acct that correctly dispersed the RMD in 25.

on 53b I put 0???

the other acct took the distribution as soon as I realized they had misinformed me that distribution would be automatic each year. That was taken on 1/6/26 which was the total of 2025 plus 2026 RMDs for that acct.

Where do i put the 2025 amt that was taken late on 1/6/26?
