Turbo Tax for 2025 returns requires windows 11.  I have one computer with windows 11.  I realize I be able to install my Deluxe software on the computer and efile 5 returns using my account and email.  But will my wife also be able to efile 5 returns using her own account and email on the same computer and will we need to uninstall my software and install a second software with my wife's account info in order for her to efile her 5 returns?

Sorry you can not buy more efiles, you can not efile more than 5.  It is an IRS limit.  If you need to efile more you have to buy Intuit Products for Tax Professionals https://taxpro.intuit.com  and sign up with the IRS as an ERO - an Electronic Returns Originator.  How to become an Authorized E-file Provider…..

Maybe some can use the Online version?

To clarify, I realize I can only efile 5 for my family.  But I understand my wife should be able to efile 5 for her family, correct?  If so, can we use the same computer to efile all 10 using two different software license that we each purchase and using our own accounts and email addresses?  Or do we need to go buy another computer and each install their own software and each computer.

Also, the IRS Free File program is a possibility if one of the filers meets the income limits or other requirements.   TurboTax and H&RB are not in that IRS program anymore, but other software companies still are.   Some also include a free state return in addition to the free Federal return so if you go with that option and need a state return, drill down on what states are supported.

NOTE:  Free File is currently closed as the IRS switches over to the new tax year, but should reopen in January 2026.    This is not to be confused with "Direct File"--a previous IRS service, which was different and has been discontinued.

It won't let you install two instances of the personal tax software on the same computer, even if the editions are different--e.g., Premier and Deluxe, etc.

I don't know what happens if you uninstall one.  I don't know if it leaves registry entries behind after uninstalling that would prevent efiling with the wife's email address from that same computer when the second product is installed, or maybe it also uses IP address.

thanks mesquitebean,

so how can each of us efile 5 returns without having to buy a new computer with windows 11 on it and then installing separate software on each computer?

There is a way to have 2 licenses. Under Help - Switch Product - Activate new product.  Don't know what that will do or what benefit you will get.  Don't think it will allow you to efile more than 5 or get another free state.  Let us know if you get it to efile more than 5 federal returns.  It knows the computer.  Maybe if you install a new program on a different computer that’s not on the same internet or WiFi.

maybe you can print and mail some of the returns.  believe you can prepare as many returns as you want with the desktop software, it's just a limit of 5 e-files (based on the number of transmissions - note this includes e-file resubmits due to AGI/IP PIN rejections so be careful with those details).

Thanks, you reminded me of something last year.... I recall last year I installed my software on our 2 computers and when I needed to install my wife's software on the 2nd computer I couldn't because mine was there.  I tried uninstalling mine and installing hers and I couldn't.  After a couple attempts with TT, I finally got someone to advise to activate her software using the Help/Switch Product/Activate New Product.  When I look at that tab now, it shows her software code listed and checked and also my software code unchecked, I assume in case I want to switch back to use my software.  We were both able to file our 5 each last year, my 5 from the first computer using my software and account, and my wife's 5 from the second computer using her software and account .  The problem this year is that TT requires windows 11 and both of computers used last year have windows 10 and they can't be inefficiently upgraded, so we had to buy a new computer with windows 11.  Thus the question, can we both use this new computer with windows 11 for both of our software's.  And based on what happen last year and your suggestion, I believe we can by installing mine first using my account, and then activating my wife's second using her software and account, and then switching between the two when filing since each can only efile 5.  Thanks for your suggestion and reminders.

I doubt that will let you efile more than 5 total.   But let us know how it works out.

Here's the thing -- we don't know what you might be able to get away with, and I don't think anyone here knows how the 5-efile limit is enforced.  It is imposed by the IRS, and no one here can give you a way around it.  It might be imposed by email address, device ID number, IP address,TT license number, or some combination of all of the above.

It might be, that if your spouse buys a separate copy with a separate TT account and separate email address, she might be able to e-file 5 more returns.  But we can't guarantee, and if you try it and it doesn't work, don't say we didn't warn you.  And you can't install two copies of the same program (say, TT Deluxe) on the same Mac or PC, it screws up the system.  You used to be able to install, say, one copy of TT Deluxe and one copy of TT Home & Business without causing problems, but I can't promise that will still work.  And it could cause problems when opening files -- you would have to open the program first and then go to File...Open to pick the file you want.   If you double-click the tax file itself, it may open the wrong program.  And as someone else said, if you finish your five returns and then uninstall copy A to install copy B, we can't promise that will work either.  Your computer might be linked to the returns via a device number that the IRS can read.

As far as I know, a person can e-file an indefinite number of returns using TT online, but each return requires a separate online account with a different user name and password, and each return will incur a separate fee, unless the return is simple and qualifies for free filing.   But, if the accounts are linked to the same e-mail address, that might trigger the limit, I don't think we know for sure one way or the other.

If some of your returns are simple returns that qualify for free filing, I would probably try to file the simple returns with separate online accounts and then stick to one copy of the desktop program.  And of course, you could always file #6-10 by printing and mailing them.

2 other options

1) IRS Free File

https://www.irs.gov/filing/irs-free-file-do-your-taxes-for-free if state returns are involved this may not be practical

2) a second computer (laptop) may be most practical if you don't want to use any online apps or there are online fees involved.

thanks for the additional info.  Sad it has to be this complex.  The 5 efile limit is per person.  You would think 2 people in the same household would be able to simply download their separate software on the same computer and each file their 5 returns using their own accounts, without all these unknowns.  We were able to do so last year but using 2 separate computers using the same home internet, 2 separate licenses, 2 separate emails.  Now they add a new twist this year requiring windows 11, so that means if we (and I assume many others soon to fine out the same) only have 1 computer with windows 11 (we had to go buy a new one as we can't upgrade the other 2), and we can't each file our 5 returns as allowed before, it will force us to buy another windows 11 computer or use some other computer at another IP location (ie one of our kids) to download the second software license and file the returns from there which I assume is OK. If so, nothing but a hassle trying to do what we are allowed to do, each file 5 returns.  Thanks for your input.  Will update once we each get rolling.
