Married living in different states

Hello everyone, I got married this past August and currently live in Maine for my graduate studies, while my wife resides in New Jersey. We both work, and now I’m confused about how to file our state taxes. I understand that I will be filing jointly for federal taxes, but I’m unsure how to approach the state tax filings. Any guidance would be appreciated!

For New Jersey, you can file separate returns, if you had no New Jersey income, you would not be required to file.  For Maine, you will be able to elect Single status, and will complete Schedule NRH to account for your spouse's income.  TurboTax will walk you through the interview for each state, but if you have questions as you are working on it, please post here again and we'll be glad to help you.
