Married Filing Separately

If you file as Married Filing Separately you are required to enter your spouse's name and Social Security number on your tax return, no exceptions.

Married Filing Separately

Yes--and you will have to enter your spouse's Social Security number as well.  The IRS cross checks when you file as MFS so they can see that you follow the rules for filing that way.  When you file MFS you both must file the same way--either you both itemize or you both take your standard deduction.

If you live in a community property state, it gets much more complicated, and you will have more information to enter regarding your spouse and their income

Community property states:  AZ, CA, ID, LA, NV, NM, TX, WA, WI
