Hi, I'm preparing to file taxes for my wife and myself as Married Filing Jointly (MFJ) but wanted to ask the experts on how to proceed in TurboTax Desktop given my social circumstances and one us working in California.
Throughout 2022, I lived and worked in OR, and my wife lived and worked in CA. I did not perform any work in CA and visited CA for the holidays.
I understand that CA is a "Community Property State" but since OR is not, I was under the impression that I do not have to pay state taxes on 50% of her income. I read in other threads that the best way (and most tax-efficient way) to file for married couples living and working in different states is to file the Federal form as MFJ and then create a mock Married Filing Separately (MFS) Federal Return form then proceed with creating individual State tax returns for each individual, which eventually have to be mailed via snail-mail.
Do I have this correct? I appreciate your expert feedback. I know many other California/other state couples are using TurboTax so I'm sure your answer will go beyond helping just me and my wife. Thanks so much.
