Married filing joint return

Hello all,

Having problems filing our tax return.  My wife is from Peru.  We married Dec-27-2021.  She just barely received her EAD card in early Feb 2023 and her SSN arrived today Feb 28, 2023.  So tonight I tried to E-file our federal joint return with her new SSN but it was promptly rejected by the IRS with the message:

The name or Social Security number for the second taxpayer (spouse) doesn't match

IRS records

Well obviously because she hasn't started working yet. So what more do I need to do now to get our joint return filed?  How do we get the IRS to recognize her name and new SSN? We've been jumping through flaming gov hoops for a year now and it's getting real tiresome.  Is the IRS forcing us to file separately so they can screw us out of several thousand dollars?

Thanks for any help!

Nate

    Thank you.

However, that link was of little help.  I've already been through all that.

You do not need to file a separate return and even if you tried her name and social is still on your return and probably would be rejected.  As you surmise likely the IRS system has not caught up with the social security changes.  If you are expecting a refund I suggest you go ahead and file using the print/mail option to file the joint return.

If you are expecting to owe a tax you might wait longer and try the e-file later and if necessary print/mail the joint return later in the season (18 Apr deadline).
