Made a mistake on taxes

If you have not filed your tax return yet, you can correct your mistakes by going back to the area where you entered your data and selecting Edit next to the item.

If you already filed your return and found out that you made a mistake You will need to file an amended return (1040X) to correct your 2019 taxes.

You won't be able to amend your tax return until the IRS releases the 1040-X Amendment form for 2019. The IRS estimate for issuing the 1040X form is mid February.

Make sure that your 2019 return was accepted in TurboTax Online or paper-filed through the mail by the IRS.

To prepare an amended return through TurboTax, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax.
  2. Scroll down to Your tax return & documents (you may need to select Show), select 2019 and then Amend (change) return.
  3. Select Amend using TurboTax Online.
  4. Carefully follow the instructions. Don't worry if your refund changes to $0. This is normal on amended returns.
  5. When finished, we'll give you instructions for printing and mailing your amended return as amendments can't be e-filed.

Made a mistake on taxes

If you have amended your tax return and your amended return shows a refund that is lower than on your original filed return, you will need to pay back the difference. The program will provide the new amount due at the top of the screen once you have prepared your amended return. You can also look at line 20 of your Form 1040-X.

If you are asking how to submit your payment, you can send a check or money order with your Form 1040-X. You can also pay your taxes online by click on this IRS Payment link.
