Long term disability and SS disability

My father was paid by insurance for long term disability but was required to file for SS disability which took a while. He was eventually approved but then required to pay back the insurance company. Which he did with the social security money he got this year. He was taxed on what was paid from insurance, should be also be taxed on what SS disability paid that he had to pay back to insurance?

Lump sum Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments are taxable.  There are options for how you report it that can minimize the tax burden.  For additional information see the following IRS FAQ regarding lump sum payments:  SSDI Lump-Sum Election Method
