Lived in PA, moved to MA, state income tax question 2024

This is concerning my daughters return.

Jan 1 to June 30,  She lived in PA and worked for PA employer.

July 1 to July 31,  She continued to live in PA, but worked for MA employer who withheld MA taxes.

August 1, to December 31. She moved to MA and worked for same MA employer

PA Tax return:  From what I understand she files a PA part year resident and pays income tax on all her PA sourced (PA employer from Jan 1 to June 30th) plus the income she received from July 1 to July 31 from her MA employer)

MA Tax Return:. She files a part year/non resident return, non resident from July 1 to July 31st that she lived in PA but received income from the MA sourced income and part year resident for the income she received from her MA employer from August 1 to December 31.

She is being double taxed for the 31 days  in July.   When I go into turbo tax to try and take a credit against her MA income,  Turbo tax has the following statement:

"Enter the total income taxed by other states which is also included in the $44,398 income reported to Massachusetts while you were a part-year resident of Massachusetts.

Also, enter the actual tax owed from the other state tax return for the income reported in both states while you were a part-year resident of Massachusetts.  (This is not your W-2 withholding)"

Question:  The part-year resident is what is confusing.  She was a non resident of MA when she was paid this income. They are indicating she has to have been a part-year resident.  Am I being to literal in Turbo Taxes statement? If it's not a valid credit then she would be paying taxes in both states for the month of July.

If the credit is valid, then it would be worth a few hundred dollars.

Thank you,

Tim

Lived in PA, moved to MA, state income tax question 2024

You are a part-year resident if you:

  • Move to Massachusetts during the tax year and become a resident, or
  • Move out of Massachusetts during the tax year and end your status as a resident.

During the year she was a part-year resident, she was a resident or nonresident, so the credit for tax paid to another state would not apply to Massachusetts.  She would get in Pennsylvania for the July income that was taxed by Massachusetts.
