line 1 of CA Standard Deduction Worksheet for Dependents

I am reviewing my child's tax returns prepared by TT, and notice that line 1 of California "Standard Deduction Worksheet for Dependents" does not match line 1 of the counterpart Federal worksheet. Specifically CA's number is $50 lower. What may be causing it? I have tried deleting the CA worksheet, and the recreated one has the same discrepancy.Std Deduction Wksht for Dependents.jpg

It is a TurboTax bug.  In 2021, $350 was added in the federal worksheet.  Now it is $400.  I'll report it right away.  Thank you for your careful review of the CA dependent return!  Using the two lowest CA tax brackets of 1 or 2 percent, the extra tax will be no more than $1 in that case.

Not being an Intuit employee, I don't have inside information on a fix timetable.  As the change should be simple, replacing 350 with 400 in one place, I expect it will happen reasonably soon.

Still broken as of this morning.  I'll re-ping about it.  You do know that you get a full refund if  you file with TurboTax and don't get you the maximum refund?  Even if it is off by $1.

Yikes! This is not the experience we want for our customers! We would like to investigate this issue further.  If you’re willing, we would like to ask if you could provide a Diagnostic File of your return.  This copy will be purged of all personally identifiable information.  If you are willing, please follow the instructions below to get us the necessary information. 

 

TurboTax Online

  1.  Sign in to your online account. ​ 
  2. Click on “Tax Tools” to the left-hand side of the screen. ​ 
  3. A drop-down will appear. Click on “Share My File With Agent”. ​ 
  4. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created. Click “OK”.  The tax file will then be sanitized and sent to us. This action will generate a Token Number  
  5. Please respond directly to this message and provide the Token Number that was generated. 

 

TurboTax Desktop 

  1. Open your return. ​ 
  2. Click “Online” and select "Send Tax File to Agent". ​ 
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created. Click “OK”. The tax file will then be sanitized and sent to us. This action will generate a Token Number  
  4. Please respond directly to this message and provide the Token Number that was generated.

Thanks for the suggestion @Debra_S. I actually finally did get to talk to TT support and provide a diagnostic copy. They said it would take 48 hrs for them for an initial response in email. That was three days ago ...

Some TurboTax Online/Desktop customers may be experiencing an issue with the IRS Form 1040 Line 12 for Standard Deduction for Dependents not transferring properly to CA State Form 540 Line 18, specifically $50.00 less.

Received an email from TT Support yesterday:

 

We are working on a fix for your TurboTax issue and we apologize for any inconvenience this caused. We do not have an estimated fix date as of today and wanted to let you know that we recommend you file an extension and pay any estimated taxes owed to State and Federal to prevent additional penalties, interest or fees associated with filing or paying late.

 

It sounds like they won't fix it before tax filing deadline.

 

And just now I've received another email, with subject line (redacted) "Your TurboTax Case xxxxxx is Closed - Please Complete our Survey". The issue is still there, but the support case closed. So I suppose they don't plan to fix?

Just a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.  They close the case because they reproduced the defect using the information you supplied.  There will be a fix, but, as you noted, it may not happen before April 18th.  If your child is in line for a refund, there is no rush to file.  If not, then pay what TurboTax says is owed using the extension form option.  When the fix arrives, you then file the actual return(s) but make certain you include the extension payment as already paid.
