Late payment

Hi,

I filed my taxes today, but due to a banking issue, won't be able to pay before midnight today. I can pay them in a day or two. I selected "pay by check" option while filing to get it done today. But can I still pay online if needed and can I use turbo tax to do that or do I have to do it via the IRS website.

Late payment

Yes, you should pay at the IRS website.  If it will be just a few days, you do not necessarily have to set up a Payment Plan- but if you may need more time, you can apply for the free short-term plan.  (NOTE: Penalties and interest will apply regardless.)

Apply Online for a Payment Plan

Short-term Payment Plan (180 days or less)

  • $0 setup fee
  • Plus accrued penalties and interest until the balance is paid in full

After applying for a short-term payment plan, you can pay the amount owed directly from your checking or savings account (Direct Pay) or by check, money order or debit/credit card.
(Fees apply when paying by card.)

Thank you, the delay is only a day or two. I underestimated the amount of time it takes to transfer from one of my investment accounts.
