It is for filing your taxes now. The IRS will send a letter with a new code next January.
@Ddublu The 2023 IP PIN is for any tax returns that you file in 2023, no matter what year the tax return is for.
I'm having a related problem.
I entered in 5 digit PINs for myself and my wife for my 2022 return. It was rejected although the 5 digit PINs were the same that we used in 2021. The message I receive about why my electronically filed forms is rejected is because of IND-183-01, my spouse did not enter a valid IP PIN.
Last year (for 2021 taxes) I had used the 6 digit IRS IP PINs and filed paper copies. There isn't a way to add the 6 digit IP PIN to Turbotax in 2022 when filing electronically.
Does this mean there is no way I can ever file electronically again using TurboTax?
@charliekennedy There IS a way to enter the 6-digit IP PIN for e-filing in TurboTax for 2022. In the Search box type "ip pin" (without the quotes), then click the link that says "Jump to ip pin." That will take you to where you can enter your wife's 6-digit IP PIN.
The IRS-issued IP PIN and your five-digit signature PIN are two separate numbers. Your PIN is one you create which acts as an electronic signature on your return; the IRS IP PIN is used for identity verification.
Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:
Or another way:
I did as you said.
I did recall that question during the walk- through. I originally said no because we hadn’t asked for new IRS IP PINs this year. As part of trying to make sure we had the latest, we asked for new IRS IP PINs yesterday so I am trying those out.
I really appreciate your help. Thank you!
