last two years turbo tax had me use 1040-sr for seniors. Is this form obsolete, I was not given the option to use.

when i filed it came up to 1040 only, why was it automatically selected for two years and this year no option

Form 1040 and 1040SR are identical except that 1040SR has bigger print.   If you were 65 or older your tax form prints out on a 1040SR.  All the lines and all of the calculations on 1040 and 1040SR are identical.  Your tax due or refund was not affected by using 1040SR.
