Wife contributed through payroll to her HSA. W2 shows nothing in box 12 titled W. Her work says W2 correct, I disagree and wont file. Who's right and what do I do?

@RBBrittain No. As I said, in prior years, there was "EMPLOYER contribution not reported on a W2". The option would put the entered amount on line 9 (not line 2). I'm just not sure it the programmers left it available for 2016. Check out the prior year software if you don't believe me.

@rebab The TT FAQ link only mentions entering "contributions", NOT "employer contributions". (And having that box in prior-year versions of TT does *NOT* help current year customers.) My prior advice stands: The W-2 is incorrect; if the employer won't fix it, call the IRS.

I still say if you e-File as is, your tax return will be accepted and approved.

To clarify my earlier post which could have be used when W2 has an omission.

In TT 2016, the option is slightly different.
One can answer Yes to the question, "Did your employer tell you about any other contributions," then on the following page put this in the box titled:  "Employer and payroll contributions not reported Box 12 of your W-2."

Thanks dmertz for this info.

In TT 2016 where did you find that question - Did your employer tell you about any other contributions?  What section - I don't see it.

I believe it was HSA section in the personal deductions section. Not by my computer to verify, but that's what I remember.

Just received a call from her employer, who talked with a "big wig" tax accountant. The w2s are wrong, need HSA contributions in box 12 Code W, and corrected w2s are in the works. Thanks for the advice and help, it is a bit confusing, but it was nice to be told I was correct and thanked for pointing it out. Now I told them that they better inform the other 60 people who have HSA contributions, before they file, that they will be receiving a corrected w2, or they will be a bit upset that they have to amend their return!
