What is an overpayment ?

It means you paid more taxes throughout the year than you owed. Your tax refund = what you overpayed. If you see a question that asks if you want to apply your overpayment to your next years taxes it means you would not get your refund now. The government would hold your refund for it to be applied to your 2017 taxes.
