Issue with correcting a basis

GBTC is an unusual ETF that only owns Bitcoin. It periodically sells some of that underlying asset to pay expenses. Those sales get reported as capital gains, but Schwab only sees and reports the date of that sale and proceeds. It does not list the date of the initial purchase or the basis. I have all that info. When I review my transactions, I can just jam in the date of purchase and the basis, and I can check the box that says the basis isn't reported on the 1099-B. If I don't type that info in during the initial review and just check the box that says the basis isn't reported, the software does give me a chance to enter the corrected basis, but it doesn't query me about the date of the initial purchase. So then it shows up in my list of sales as a short term gain (I have held the original "stock" over 4 years at this point). I have sometimes just jammed in the correct info and not checked the "info missing on 1099-B" box, but that led to the sale not being characterized at all (neither long nor short). I am trying to figure the correct way to put in the purchase date, basis and have it generate the correct category (Long term) sale.

Since you are having to adjust each transaction anyway the easiest way to fix this problem is to delete the imported 1099-B and click the "I'll type it in myself" box.  Then just manually enter the transactions as they should be reported.  That will keep the system from pulling data from the 1099-B that interferes with what you are trying to do.
