Is there anyway to file just federal and not state after you have registered?

It is not giving me the options to pick either state of federal.

What are you seeing when you go to the File section?

It asks if I want to  e-file, when I go to change options, it only gives me the option to change Federal.  When I go to the next page, is allows me to print both federal and state.  I already file state.  I just need to ensure that will not get filed again.

Did you file the State by mail?  Or did you e-file the State?
If it's not allowing you to change the State - that would be an indication that TurboTax is recognizing that you have already filed.  What happens if you go ahead and Continue in the File section?
(And don't worry - until you actually indicate to e-file now, you can still go back).

I filed on the state web site.  It allows me to continue; however, it is not telling me which returns it is e-filing.

Can you choose to change the state to File by Mail?

See the additional answer below.

Yes, you can just file the Federal without the State.

  • When you are in your return, click on File in the left column
  • Once you have completed Step 1 (registered your return) and Step 2 (how you want to receive refund/pay amount due), click the Start button beside Step 3.  (See screenshot below)
  • You will see "Here are your filing choices".  Click on "I'd like to change filing methods". (See the second screenshot below)
  • You will get a pop-up titled "Change filing methods"  (See the third screenshot below)
  • Under your State return, click on "I'm not ready to file"
  • Click Save.  This will take you back to "Here are your filing choices" which will indicate that your State return will be filed later.
  • Click Continue and go on to file your Federal return.

Since we can't see what is happening on your return, it would be helpful for you to initiate a call with us.  TurboTax will call you back and an agent can share your TurboTax screen with you.  Since you are using the Free edition of TurboTax, you may be required to pay a fee.

You can contact us by following the steps below:

  1. Log into your return and continue it.  (You need to be inside your return).
  2. Click on the help icon in the upper right corner
  3. Click on Contact us (See the screenshot below)
  4. Give an explanation of what the problem with your return is (Need help with how to file)
  5. Select "Get a callback"
  6. Enter your telephone number, name and e-mail (See the second screenshot below)
  7. Click on the Call me button  (Just below the Call me button, you will see an estimate of the wait time for your call back.)
