I have used TurboTax for the past 5 years and thought I would be eligible for the free IRS filing as I only worked three months of last year. At the end of the return I am told I am not eligible however I still want to file with TurboTax. How can I do this as there is no option to pay for the return? I tried to start my return all over again however this made no difference.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
For "normal" Turbotax, the fee depends on the extra forms you need for your situation, not your income. The IRS FreeFile version is a separate web site, you can use it no matter what forms you need, but your income must be less than $36,000. You will also have to make a new account and start over since it is a separate web site.
You will need to leave the IRS Free File site, and go to TurboTax Online
I have done this however it does not work. It must be a tech issue. The IRS Free File has merged with my regular account. I can see all my returns from the previous years.
Thank you for your reply however I did not need to make a new account. The IRS free file merged with my regular account. I can see all my information already there and my previous returns. Potentially a tech issue.

If you go to the FreeFile site and use your regular user name and password, you will be logged back into your regular Turbotax account. You have to make a new account with a different user name and password. It can use the same email address for notifications. You may need to delete your web browser history, cookies, or cache, to stop from being automatically logged into your regular account.
In 2019 I filed IRS free file; It says this year I don't qualify.
But It won't even allow me to go to turboTax Online and pay to file. Last year's IRS Free File overrides everything. The only place I can go is to the IRS. It has been this way for months.. Now I'm at the deadline and it still isn't fixed.
I need to file a schedule C, otherwise basic.
Please Help. I don't want to have to start over with a completely different software program.
Last year one user posted this. It works for 2020 too.....
I found this message thread because I was searching for an answer on how to do this. I finally found it and wanted to post it in case others find it too.
1. Go to https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/compare/online/
2. Click "help me choose"
3. Select the options that apply to your situation
4. Click "start for free" of whatever product you want to use when it gives you the suggestions
After that, it asked how I did my taxes last year. I selected Turbo Tax, then it had me sign in. Once I was signed in, it asked if I was sure I wanted to change to a commercial product and not use the free file program. I selected yes, clicked ok, and I was back into the normal system and out of the free file system.
But you will need the Self Employed version to fill, out Schedule C. You can enter Self Employment Income into Online Deluxe or Premier but if you have any expenses you will have to upgrade to the Self Employed version. Or use any of the Desktop CD/Download programs.
How to enter income from Self Employment
