Insurance Penalty

The system is assuming I didn't have insurance in 2016, but I had insurance through my parents. Did I check a wrong box?

Insurance Penalty

Are you claimed as a dependent on their tax return? If so, make sure that you indicate that in the Personal Info section. Then when you go through the Health Insurance section, you shouldn't have to enter anything.

If you aren't claimed as their dependent, but they had you on their private insurance all year, indicate that you had health insurance all year, and that it wasn't one of the less common health insurance choices. That should be sufficient to proceed.

If you aren't claimed as their dependent, but they had you on an insurance policy through the Affordable Care Act, you need to enter a 1095-A for this situation.
