A cash inheritance is not reported on a tax return.
even though it was a cashiers check?I was told I would get a K-1 from her but ive received nothing?
Brother and I and sister are listed on the trust form [when my father passed. His shares got divided among us kids and we each got a cashier's check in our names) The money was distributed to my aunt who then put it in her account then sent us kids a cashier's check. Each getting around $50.000.I'm not sure how or if I need to claim it (with no forms) I live in Delaware but the check came from California from her personal bank so I don't want to get in trouble with the IRS.Should I claim it under misc. cash(even if I never received a K-1? )
Thank you for your response not sure what you mean by foreign person? but the money did come from a house that was in an estate (my grandmothers) she's passed, and my aunt and father were left the estate. Since my father passed, his part was left and divided between my brother, sister, and I. My aunt was the person in charge of the estate and decided to sell the house, so that money was put in the trust and my aunt got the money from the sale and per my grandmother's request, my father's money was to be divided and distributed to us kids. So, my aunt decided to just send us cashier's checks. I don't know what to do:(
My aunt is a US citizen
@CRTEMPLE no the questions is about the decedent --- you said it was ultimately from your father's estate -- no ?
Was he a US person ? If yes -- there is nothing to report. If he was NRA -- then ,and only then, and if the amount given to your is => US$100,000 , you will need to file a form 3520
