I received an extension for filing NJ income tax return. I paid balance of tax by the October deadline. This week I received a Late Filing Fee notice. Why is that?

Was it a late filing fee notice or a late payment notice? Estimated payments are due on the original filing deadline. There is no extension for tax payments.

That's because taxes were still due back in April.  The extension was only to file, not to pay.

I got this exact same "Late Filing Penalty"  from NJ.  I filed both Federal and NJ taxes electronically with TurboTax.  I filled out and filed extension for Federal back before April 15th.  My amount due was less than 10% of what I owed annually .  I submitted and paid amount due for both Federal and NJ before Oct 15th.  Federal charged me interest on what was due and thats all.  NJ charged me interest of what was due AND a 25% PENALTY on the amount due !!!!

• In NJ, you must pay at least 80% of your actual tax liability by the original due date, or the extension will be denied.

The Division of Taxation will notify you only if the extension request is denied, but not until after the return is actually filed.

Denial of the extension will result in the imposition of penalty and interest charges from the original due date of the return.
