Indicating a Move

Hello,

I lived and earned money in NJ for part of the year, then was unemployed in NJ, then moved in with my parents and changed employers to live and work in CA for the rest of the year.

However, my W-2 for my job in NJ has my parents' CA address listed under "employee's name, address, and zip code" as I wanted to make sure I would still get any mail, including tax documents, once I moved.

How do I clearly indicate when I lived where? I am concerned about being taxed as a CA resident the entire year (or having NJ think I lived in CA when I received unemployment income from them.)

Also, how does this work with bank-related income (interest, investments?)

Thank you!

You will file a part year return for each state with your residency dates. You do want a permanent address where you can be contacted -not an old address.

Your dates of residency will determine which income and how much goes where. Interest and dividends earned while living in NJ, go on the NJ return and the rest to CA.

The program will ask for you to allocate income.
