Do I have to pay federal taxes on the unemployment I received in 2021?

At this point--yes. Congress has not passed any new laws regarding the taxability of unemployment received in 2021. The recent tax law change was only for unemployment received in 2020. But there is no telling what Congress will do between now and .....oh...maybe the middle of the next tax season.
The unemployment compensation you received in 2021 must be included as income on the 2021 tax return you file in 2022.
Your state will send you a Form 1099-G for the compensation received in 2021. The form is usually mailed in January or February or your state may require you to access the 1099-G on the state unemployment department website.
If your total income is greater than the Standard Deduction for your filing status you will have taxes owed on the income received.
Hi Imacaller!
Thanks for your question. Congress has not announced any plans to exclude a portion of unemployment benefits from tax yet. But stay tuned, this could change. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
Thanks!
