No, it is not a problem. Enter your surname starting with the first letter and enter as many letters as the space will take. This will not affect your tax return in any way and it will not delay it. The IRS uses a specific pattern for identifying individuals with their name and social security number. It does not use all of the letters, however the beginning letters of your name are what matters.
This is not correct! When came to the final steps, my e-file was incorrect because my name didn’t match their records (my surname was too long). Then, when correcting it, I had to go through filling by mail because wasn’t allowing me input electronically the long surname.
Return to 'My Information' at the beginning of the return and ensure there are no extra spaces either before or after your first or last name. If you have a space in your name, remove that as well. TurboTax will read a space as a character.
The IRS matches the first four letters of your last name and the last four digits of your social security number to what is on file at Social Security. So it's important this information is correct.
