Should I use turbo tax Deluxe or Premier?

I sold gold and silver coins this year at a loss. I need to report the sale in schedule d and form 8949.

Should I use turbo tax Deluxe or Premier?

In the Online version, Schedule D and Form 8949 can only be handled by Premier or Home and Business (aka newly-titled "TurboTax Self-Employed.")   Online Deluxe cannot handle those forms.

In the desktop version (CD/download), all editions can handle Schedule D and Form 8949.  The desktop editions differ mainly in the amount of help and guidance.  They can all handle all the usual forms.   Most of the desktop editions include a state program.   Deluxe desktop, however, comes in 2 versions--Federal only and a combo Fed and State version.  If purchased directly from TurboTax, Deluxe is the combo Fed and State version.  If purchased elsewhere, one has to be careful.  Basic Edition does not have a state program and cannot import from ItsDeductible.

The desktop version can handle multiple returns.  The online version is only for 1 Federal return per account per year.  There is an extra fee to prepare a state return in the online version.

In the desktop editions, there is a 24.99 fee to efile a state return, except free for New York state.  There is no fee to print and mail the state returns.

The desktop editions have the benefit of Forms Mode for viewing and even directly editing forms when necessary.  The Online editions do not have this feature.

I'm not sure what your circumstance is, and I'm not a tax person, but this is what the IRS says about sales of gold and silver coins.  If you are a dealer, it would be handled differently.

"Gold, silver, gems, stamps, coins, etc., are capital assets except when they are held for sale by a dealer. Any gain or loss from their sale or exchange generally is a capital gain or loss. If you are a dealer, the amount received from the sale is ordinary business income. "
