Importing from federal to Alabama state has incorrect information.

What information is incorrect?

Alabama has different tax rules than the IRS.  It is possible that what you are seeing is the difference in the handling of the information by the IRS vs Alabama.

For instance, Alabama does not want you to report Unemployment, Social Security, certain retirement benefits,  and several other items that the IRS does consider taxable.

Alabama also uses a graduated standard deduction.  So, this would affect your AGI for AL compared to the federal return.

Vanessa,

Thanks. My Alabama inport information is doubling my gross earnings. I also files Mississippi first, and it did not do this. My total earnings from my w2's is correct on federal and MS. Can I fill this in without importing?  I have already paid this and tried to file with errors rejecting it.

Thanks

I am assuming you live in Alabama?  DId your W-2 have 2 states on it, one showing MS wages and the other showing AL wages with both amounts the same?  If so, this would be the issue.

No, you can't separate state from federal.  The import is automatic.  But, you can go through and edit the income.  As you walk through the screens, there should be an income screen that shows you your wages.  On this screen click edit, then enter the correct income.

You can edit income in the state return?

Vanessa was referring to input screens that appear in most states that allow you to "edit" state income. You may also see screens asking you to allocate income to each state. But it depends on how you are filing.

Please confirm that you live in Alabama and that you are filing as a non-resident in Mississippi. Or are you filing part-year in Alabama and part-year in Mississippi? Or are you in the military in one state or the other?
