Illinois e-file ineligibility Return has a W-2 SSN that does not match the taxpayer's or spouse's SSN/ITIN on the return
You may want to confirm each individual detail of your W-2 is accurate, complete and matches the form you received perfectly. Here's how:
- Sign in (go here if you can't)
- Once you're on your Tax Timeline, select Continue working on/Take me to my return
- Click Federal Taxes across the top, then Wages & Income just under the topic name.
- Your income summary is displayed (you may have to scroll down and choose to skip to see all income for a full list)
- Select Start/Edit/Add to the right of Job (W-2)
- You can now +Add another W-2, Edit, and Delete(trash). Select Edit.
- Confirm every detail of your W-2 is accurate and complete, including your employer's name, address and Federal ID/EIN. Once confirmed, you can attempt to e-file once more (or if you encounter this message because of a state, start over the state return using these steps).
- If you still encounter this message, delete the W-2, then add it back the form's details manually.

Illinois e-file ineligibility Return has a W-2 SSN that does not match the taxpayer's or spouse's SSN/ITIN on the return
I'm seeing this issue in 2020, and it was never an issue for me before. I was just going through doing my taxes, and I've already deleted, and redone the state portion 3 times, and it keeps coming back with "Return has a W-2 SSN that does not match the taxpayer's or spouse's SSN/ITIN on the return." I've never run into this before. I file single. I'm not married. My SSN is correct on the federal return, and it was imported onto the state return. Please help. I don't want to print and mail my state return. I've never had to before. Something is wrong on TurboTax's side.

does your SSN you entered for the w-2 match your SSN on the 1040?

Yeah I found the issue. For some reason when it auto-pulled the SSN from my w2 on import, it filled in the box with just a partial SSN. May be something for others to keep an eye on if their w2 gets imported and the fields populated automatically.

that would imply that your employer did not format the w-2 for import in the manner specified by TT.

I was able to go to the actual form, somehow, and I saw that only like 3 digits of my SSN were in there. So in the little input box (that looks just like the paper form, but with boxes you can type in) I updated it to the full SSN, and everything was good after that. I honestly have no idea how I got to that form view, unfortunately.

that is weird because on the Illinois return, your SSN is picked up from the SSN you entered in your personal info.

Then that would tell me there's an issue on the TurboTax side that is incorrectly pulling SSN info into the form. I saw this was an issue that TurboTax had on their end a couple years ago, when doing this search, and TurboTax eventually fixed it. Looks like it's happening again. I did my return 3 times, deleting EVERYTHING, and entering it all back in, verifying my SSN was correct each and every time in the personal info, and each time, the same error happened upon "Review". Once I was able to somehow get to that "paper form view", was I able to see that the SSN was only partially being populated, and I updated it to the full number in there, and then the review process was fine, and I was able to digitally submit both federal and state returns.
As an IT systems administrator, this 100% comes off as an issue with the form pulling the SSN into the form incorrectly.

Obviously it's not my employer doing something improperly, as this person, who is not employed by my company, is also reporting the issue.

You have to find the social security number field on the actual form for your federal return and update it to your correct SSN. Then the state will pull properly from the federal return. It looks like TurboTax forms aren't pulling the SSN properly into the form. Mine was only like 3 or 4 digits when I found the problem. Once you update that on the federal form you'll be fine. TurboTax probably needs to fix this on their end. Any way to @turbotax ?
