if you are due a refund, there is no 'cost'. The IRS has been pleased to use your money interest free!
if you owe, there should be a penalty on Line 38 of Form 1040. That is an estimate only and the IRS will bill you separately if there is additional owed.
Look at your Form 1040. If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late. Your refund is on line 35a. If you owe tax to the IRS, it is shown on line 37.
