I want to file my state taxes now and my federal on 4/15 -- how do I file them separately?

If the federal tax return is not being e-filed now, then you can only print and mail the state return, it cannot be e-e-filed if the federal return is not being e-filed.

Do you owe on the federal return?  You can efile it now with state and say you will mail a check.  Then you can pay on 4/15 by check or Direct Debit directly on the IRS website.
