Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

I want a tax prep platform that’s not predatory.

I’m tired of Turbotax using dark UX patterns to suck every cent out of me that they can. I’m tired of being taken advantage of and tired of how easy it is to upgrade, but impossible to downgrade if you get tricked into one of their premium tier cash extraction services.

Anyone know of a tax service that actually treats you like a valued customer instead of just calling you one?

Have you tried using the Desktop CD/Download program?  Then you pay once at the beginning to buy the program.  And you can buy a lower version, all the Desktop programs have the same forms. You just get more help and guidance in the higher versions.   There are several other advantages to the Desktop program.   And you can find the Desktop program on sale at stores like Costco.

I have not, have only tried the online versions. Does sound nice to know what you’re paying up front and avoid the repetitive upgrade prompts.

If you want to use the Desktop program next year (it usually comes out in early Nov.) you can transfer from your 2022 Online return.   So you should download the .tax2022 data file from online now before they close online and you might  not be able to get it.  You need the .tax2022 file to transfer into 2023 or if you ever need to amend 2022.

the desktop software also will force you to upgrade is you need a form that is not in your low-priced version

No that is not true.  All Desktop versions have the same forms.   You can use Deluxe or even Basic if you don't need a state return.

The only extra Desktop fee that annoys many...is extra $20/$25 state e-file fee that is imposed for the state at the time you e-file it.  (Except for NY e-filings)

....(That is...IF you buy one of the desktop versions that includes one free state software set.....Basic does not include a free state software set....some store-bought Deluxe do not either, and is "intended" for those folks who do not need a state software set).

If I can use Basic to file my tax return, why doesn't everybody purchase the Basic edition??

BASIC

1)   If you need a state software....you have to buy it as an extra charge within the program.....such that it ends up costing more than if you had gone ahead and bought a Deluxe set that included one free state set.

2)  Then, there's Opinions as to how helpful it is....in the past, Basic was really pretty sparse with any help.   But few (none?) of us helpers in here has bought it recently.....so details may be limited as to how well it does, or doesn't flow.

3)  Certainly, if one has ONLY. W-2 income, and some interest to enter, AND they live in a state without an income tax...then Basic should be fine.  But as soon as you start getting into SE income, or special student credits, or energy credits, rental income, etc.....it might be a bit sparse in not leading you to the right place to enter those things unless you are already adept at using the software (But maybe it's better now).
