TurboTax Desktop for Windows will transfer last year's tax data file (.tax2022 file) or PDF from the 2022 version of TurboTax Desktop or Online. It even transfers PDFs created in TaxACT or H&R Block tax prep software.

We'll transfer over 100 fields to help you get a head start on your return, including:

  • Names and other personal info
  • Social Security numbers
  • Addresses
  • Employer and business info
  • Income forms such as W-2s and 1099s
  • Credits and deductions
  • Refunds and tax owed amounts
  • Capital losses
  • Disallowed deductions
  • Credits carried over to subsequent years
  • Tax schedule information
  • E-file signatures if you successfully e-filed last year

Be aware that TurboTax does not transfer information that requires complex calculations, like depreciation.

My information in H&R Block tax software is saved as a .T22 file.  I also have a printable PDF of my return that was rejected by Turbotax.  This is very frustrating to me.  I expected more from Intuit.  I left H&R Block because they didn't support their software.

Cynthiad66 provided links to all the information on how to transfer your information.

Note the following information:

You can transfer basic information if your 2022 PDF is a 1040 return generated through TurboTax, H&R Block, or TaxACT software (Form 1040-SR is not supported for PDF transfer) A tax data file will provide a more complete import.

  • Be aware that in some cases TurboTax won't be able to read the PDF, for example, if it's password-protected or is a scanned copy of a PDF instead of an actual PDF file.
  • TurboTax Desktop only supports PDFs from 2022

I have a PDF created from H&R Block.  It had the cover page along with the return.  Turbotax couldn't read it.  I tried to edit the PDF and remove the cover page but that failed too.

I think the problem is moot though.  I went thru and entered everything manually for this tax year and I am in good shape.

The transfer from PDF of an H&R block to Turbotax simply does not work now. Maybe it worked for some people earlier, but now it looks like Turbo tax stopped support for that.

I ran into the same problem, coming from H&R Block after they wouldn't fix a SW bug on their side. I couldn't import from our 2023 return until I re-opened H&RBlock 2023 and printed an abridged set of 2023 tax docs. I didn't print all of the worksheets, and left out schedule E. This was then readable by TT2024, so I got a bit of my info read in automatically. That said, it interpreted our 2023 AGI without a decimal point, thus multiplying it by 100 (that'll probably haunt me when I go to efile - will need to catch it). Be sure to verify all imported info!
