I took out a loan to pay IVF fertility treatments. I am currently making payments to USAA. Do I claim full payment made to the dr via check, or just what I paid to USAA?

I'm making payments to pay off the loan, but the loan was deposited to my bank account and I paid the docs office by a personal check.  So do I only count what I've actually paid for or for the full amount of the loan, as I did pay the doctors office that amount.

You may deduct the amount you paid to your physician.  The loan payments are not relevant for the medical expense deduction.

Good luck with your treatments!

Thank you.  Another question...I'm enrolled in a shared risk program so if my treatments are unsuccessful, the doc will refund the total that I got the loan out for.  With that being said, should I only claim what I've paid towards the loan or still for the full amount?  If I only claim what I've paid so far....can I claim the remainder of the payments I paid on next years taxes?  I don't know which would be the smarter move.  I don't want to claim and then get refunded and be responsible to pay a bunch of money on taxes next year.
