I recieved a letter stating i had to verify my identity for my state taxes will this effect my federal tax claim also?

I received a letter from my state saying I had to do a verification of my identity for my state tax return.. does that effect my federal tax return in the sense they will hold it longer too as said in the letter for my state?

No, your federal tax return is processed separately from your state tax return so your federal refund should not be affected.

If they sent me a verification letter for my state tax return and I identified it will they also send another one for federal tax thank you

Not necessarily, but possibly.  The state and federal returns are completely separate in their processing.  Just because the state sends you a letter does not mean the federal will require you to verify your identity.

However, it also does not mean the federal will not request identity verification.  If it has been a while since you filed your federal return and it was accepted, then you should watch your mail for a letter from the IRS in case you have been selected to verify for both.

Federal and state tax returns are processed separately by two completely separate entities.   Verifying your identity to the state does not mean you will also have to verify with the IRS.

Helo id like to add on the the question please, let's say you owe some back child support and it's going to be deducted from your taxes. Won't the office of coast containment have to wait for both you federal and state taxes be completed to deduct what you owe or will it come out of whatever (being federal or state) tax is finished first. And I do apologize I understand it's a bit of a confusing question, it's the only way I can't think to ask without going in-depth to my personal affairs. Thank you

The amount will be repaid from whichever revenue department the agency requested the offset from. It could come from federal, state, or both. Both returns don't need to be completed for the refund to be offset.
