I mailed my federal and state return together to IRS. IS IT OKAY?

You have to mail your Federal return to the IRS. You have to mail your state return to your state tax agency. If you mail your state tax return to the IRS, they will very likely just toss it in the trash. The IRS does not need or want your state tax return. The instructions that print out when you print your returns to file by mail clearly tell you where to mail them. They tell you where to mail your Federal return and they tell you where to mail your state tax return.

@amdblackwell0219   You are posting this to a year old thread.  It seems that you mailed your state return to the IRS, which is wrong, and your state return has likely been discarded by the IRS.  What state do you need to send your return to?  We can help you google where to send it--or you could google that information yourself.  Your state return has to be submitted to the state (NOT the IRS, which is for your federal return).  You will have to print it out again so that you can mail it to the correct place.

I have received a letter in the mail from the irs saying I need to send my tax return and sign it to the address to the irs in Kansas City, does that mean I need to send my federal return or my state? and what is the tax return form I need to send? I thought I already did this but im guessing its not the right one since I got another letter in the mail. Im just wondering if you know because I haven't found anything on this

The IRS is your federal return.  They want your federal 1040.  What year?  What else did they say?  Maybe a form was missing.  Did you originally efile or mail it?

I accidentally sent my state tax return with my federal. Will that affect anything? I know where to get another copy of my state tax return again and send it to the right place.

Did you mail it to the IRS?  Hopefully the IRS processes the federal return.  They will ignore the state return.  So you still need to file state to the state.

Did you have a question? VolvoGirl has answered above most of the issues:

1. The IRS will probably ignore your state return, and

2. You will need to get a copy of your state return and mail it to the state separately. You should be able to find the mailing address at your state's Department of Revenue website, or you can post your state here, and we'll look it up.

Will the IRS still file my federal tax return if my state return is with it? Also, I didn't send a copy of my w2 with my federal return is that major? Can I resend my federal with my w2 or wait 6 weeks?

I mailed my federal and state return together to IRS. IS IT OKAY?

@smartguy_   Federal and state are completely separate.  Did you mail your returns?  What did you do?  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes.   They go to different places.  If you sent them together in the same envelop they will throw out the other one and won't forward it.

Don't resend anything.  Wait for the IRS or state to ask you for any missing information.
