I have received a letter in the mail from the irs saying I need to send my tax return and sign it to the address to the irs in Kansas City, does that mean I need to send my federal return or my state? and what is the tax return form I need to send? I thought I already did this but im guessing its not the right one since I got another letter in the mail. Im just wondering if you know because I haven't found anything on this
The IRS is your federal return. They want your federal 1040. What year? What else did they say? Maybe a form was missing. Did you originally efile or mail it?
I accidentally sent my state tax return with my federal. Will that affect anything? I know where to get another copy of my state tax return again and send it to the right place.
Did you mail it to the IRS? Hopefully the IRS processes the federal return. They will ignore the state return. So you still need to file state to the state.
Did you have a question? VolvoGirl has answered above most of the issues:
1. The IRS will probably ignore your state return, and
2. You will need to get a copy of your state return and mail it to the state separately. You should be able to find the mailing address at your state's Department of Revenue website, or you can post your state here, and we'll look it up.
Will the IRS still file my federal tax return if my state return is with it? Also, I didn't send a copy of my w2 with my federal return is that major? Can I resend my federal with my w2 or wait 6 weeks?
@smartguy_ Federal and state are completely separate. Did you mail your returns? What did you do? You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes. They go to different places. If you sent them together in the same envelop they will throw out the other one and won't forward it.
Don't resend anything. Wait for the IRS or state to ask you for any missing information.
