You can contact the employers for copies of the W-2s. If the employer is out of business or unreachable, make sure it isn't available online, or see if it was emailed and went to a junk folder. Check to see if TurboTax can import the W-2. Please see this TurboTax tips article for more information and steps you can take.

You can also order information return transcripts from the IRS. The transcript you would need is a Wage and income transcript.

You may register to use Get Transcript Online to view, print, or download transcripts.

You may also request transcripts by submitting Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return.

Another option would be to use year-to-date pay stubs to create a Substitute W-2. See this TurboTax tips article for more information. You can prepare a substitute W-2 in TurboTax. You can still file your taxes, but you'll need to complete Form 4852, Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, which includes calculating your earnings. Here's how:

  1. Start by selecting Work on my W-2
  2. Enter the Employer ID Number (EIN) if you know it, or leave it blank
  3. Select Type it in myself
  4. Complete the requested W-2 information using your most recent pay stubs to estimate your total income and total taxes paid (including federal, state, and local taxes)
  5. Continue to the screen, Let's check for uncommon situations and select Didn't get a W-2

TurboTax will ask you a few follow-up questions to complete Form 4852. Once you're finished, you'll have a chance to print a copy for your records. We strongly recommend you do this so you have a record of what you earned and what you contributed to Social Security.

The IRS doesn't allow Form 4852 to be filed electronically, so you'll need to print out the necessary forms and mail them to the IRS.
