I have my transcript but don't know what number I need to use

There is a section on the transcript called Adjustments to Income. Adjusted Gross Income is the last line in this section.

The transcript for a 1040ez will be 2-3 pages long. The transcript for a 1040 will be 7 or 8 pages long.

Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). To e-file your 2017 taxes, the IRS requires your 2016 AGI for identity verification (unless you didn't file 2016 taxes; in that case enter 0 as your AGI). If you requested your tax transcript from the IRS, you were probably looking for the AGI.
