I have e-filed through TurboTax. I had instructed TurboTax to pay IRS via a debit, a large amount. A full business day went by and nothing was debited from my account?

I can't figure out how to see the electronic payment instructions in TurboTax now that I've filed. I don't know if it's actually going to make the payment or not. It's a very large payment, and there could be material penalties if it's not made. I've downloaded the filed return but it doesn't include any payment instructions at all in my download. So I don't know if it's going to actually pay IRS or not, or if I need to make a special payment.

To pay a federal tax debt using TurboTax you can only pay that debt either using direct debit from your bank account, by credit card or by printing and mailing Form 1040-V with a check to the IRS.

Which option did you use?

Note. if payment made by direct debit -

  • Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.

It may take the IRS a couple days to take the payment.

Was your efile Accepted?   When you efile you get back 2 emails. The first email only confirms the transmission. The second email says if the IRS (or state) Accepted or Rejected your efile. Check back though your emails and spam/junk folder.

When you log into your account you should also see the status and if it was Accepted or Rejected, Started, Printed, Ready to Mail, etc. What does it say?

And there should already be penalties if you didn't pay the tax due by April 15.  Do you have a penalty on  1040 line 38?

Thank you.

+ There are not penalties since I live in LA County which due to wildfire meant that payments & filing deadlines were extended to Oct 15.

+ Yes the return was accepted by IRS--I got the confirmation email as such.

+ I was able to get back to the filing instructions in TurboTax (not easy to figure out). The instructions make clear that TurboTax is going to have IRS direct debit me. I have TurboTax my bank account information along with the request for debit. That just hasn't happened yet, even though the expected date was yesterday.

+ Really I'm trying to figure out if I should in addition to those instructions make a payment directly. But I read elsewhere on the internet that sometimes IRS can take up to 7 days to actually debit your account. The funds are still in my bank--they clearly haven't moved yet. I *think* it will still count as timely payment if I've given the instructions to direct debit, even if IRS debits later?

Thank you!
