The online edition does not require an activation code.  Only the CD/Download versions require an activation code.

i purchased a standard online turbotax edition from costco with a activation code and was told you don"t use it with the online version.How will turbo know that it is prepaid?

The CD version is what you will need the activation code for. You’ll only need to enter it and validate the first time you install it on your computer.
