If you overpaid your taxes and reported the taxes paid on the tax return you will get a refund for the overpayment on the tax return.
If you used the TurboTax Easy Extension to electronically file the extension request, Form 4868, and make the tax payment with the request, the payment should already entered on your tax return. Provided you used the same user ID for the 2020 online tax return as was used for the Easy Extension. You can check to see if the amount is on your tax return by clicking on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Then click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Then click on Preview my 1040.
The federal extension payment will be shown on Schedule 3 Line 9. The amount from Schedule 3 Part II Line 13 flows to Form 1040 Line 31
To enter, change or delete a payment made with an extension request (Federal, State, Local) -
On the next screen select the type of extension payment made and click on the start or update button
Or enter federal extension payment in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to federal extension payment
Very helpful! Thank you.
If you entered the estimated pre-payment in Turbotax, then the refund amount stated already takes into account the prior payment. If you did not enter the estimate paid with the extension, enter it under "estimates and other taxes paid" on the deductions and credits screen.
So when filing for my extension, if I payed $5000 in estimated taxes for 2023, and my federal refund was $2000, does that mean the actual refund I was due was $3000? And is that the number I should now report on my 2024 taxes? Does the same go for state taxes?
in the tax payments worksheet you enter the extension payment.

Mike, I'm not sure that's what the new user @ Taxquestions17 meant, if that's who you were responding to. Actually, I don't understand what all that user is doing and why 2023 is being mentioned at this point in time. Maybe they'll explain better.
The tax year is 2023, but they are filed and paid in 2024. So now that I’m filing taxes for 2024 in 2025, TurboTax is asking what my refund for last year was. Let’s say I pre-paid estimated taxes of $5000, and ended up getting a Federal Refund of $2000. Doesn’t that refund include whatever I overpaid in the estimation? Basically what number do I write down as my REFUND amount from last year for this years taxes? Thanks for all your help folks.
Your refund was 2,000.
Is this for calculating estimated tax payments for 2025 or for calculating a payment with your extension?
What section are you in that is asking?
Could it be asking about a state refund you got?
A State Tax Refund is taxable if you itemized deductions on that prior year's federal return and took a deduction for state income taxes instead of the sale tax. You got a deduction benefit for it so now you have to include it as income. If you took the standard deduction it is not taxable and you don't need to report it.
Thanks for your help! This is in the very beginning on TurboTax in the Wages & Income section. It asks if I got a refund from last years taxes and how much it was. I just didn’t know if the number listed as my refund from TurboTax took into account what I pre-paid as estimated taxes when I filed for an extension on my LAST return.
I think the program is asking about any STATE refunds you received in 2024.
Depending how you claimed deductions on your 2023 tax year Federal Return, a STATE refund received in 2024 could be income that needs to be reported on your 2024 tax year federal return.
